Accra, Oct. 18, GNA - Catholics from the Northern, Upper East and Upper West regions who worship at the Good Shepherd Parish in Tema, have donated relief items to some flood victims at Garu in the Upper East Region.
The recipients were part of people that were affected by the recent spillage of the Bagre dam from Burkina Faso.
In response to the plight of people they term as fellow northern brothers and sisters, the members pooled funds together and also raised assistance from within the church through an appeal that yielded dividends.
“The members of Charles Lwanga Society were moved beyond tears when they saw the narrative of the plight of the people on television. We therefore decided to rise up to the occasion,” Mr. Awunie Adongo, President of the Society said at a short ceremony to officially hand out the relief items.
“As dedicated sons and daughters of the three regions of the north, the clear message from the St. Charles Lwanga society is that even though we are physically away from them, we are still very much connected to their roots.”
Rev Fr. Matthew Haruna the Parish Priest of the Holy Angels Parish in Garu who received the items on behalf of the victims paid a glowing tribute to the members of St Charles Lwanga Society for remembering them in the hour of need.
He also used the opportunity to call for more help from benevolent hearts and other philanthropic organisations to support the the flood victims of Garu.
Present at the short donation ceremony were Mr Cephas Natio and Ms Regina Agrengsore, both Executive members of the St Charles Lwanga Society of the Good Shepherd Parish in Tema.
The Society is made up of faithful Catholics who hail from the three regions, but are based in Tema and worship at the Good Shepherd Parish in Community 2 Tema.
Before deciding to help, the society is said to have sought inspiration from their patron Saint - St. Charles Lwanga, first.
It was under this inspiration that the society decided to put personal money together and also appealed for help from other church members who fellowship at the Good Shepherd Parish.
