Kumasi, Aug. 19, GNA - The Adum Wesley Cathedral of the Methodist Church Ghana (MCG), has for the second time, this year, gone to the aid of the Kumasi Central Prisons with a donation of food and other items for the upkeep of the inmates.
They included four bags each of sugar and corn, three bags each of rice and gari, thirty (30) boxes of soap, detergents, toiletries, sanitary pads, as well as second-hand clothes.
The Social Services Directorate of the Cathedral, earlier this year, mobilized resources for the reconstruction of a broken wall of the Prisons, built in 1901.
The facility meant to house 700 inmates had been over-stretched and having for now, about two thousand prisoners in the limited cells.
Mr Bilson Amoah, Society Steward in-charge of Social Services of the Cathedral, speaking to the Ghana News Agency, on the side-line of the donation in Kumasi, said the church believed in the betterment of humanity.
The gesture, he noted, was in line with their commitment to ‘feed the poor’, while assisting the Ghana Prisons Service to take care of the inmates.
“Nobody was born a criminal. We should also be mindful of the fact that even a saint has a past, and the criminal has a future”, he observed.
The donation formed part of activities marking the 180th anniversary celebration of the Cathedral, the pioneer Methodist church to be established under the Kumasi Diocese.
Mr Bilson Amoah said the Cathedral, which was sited about 30 metres off the prisons, would continue to reach out to the inmates physically and spiritually.
Dr Samuel Brefo Adubufour, Chairman in-charge of the Planning Committee for the anniversary, urged the inmates not to be despaired by their current situation, but always look up to God for inspiration.
Chief Superintendent of Prisons Paa Kwesi Ansah, Ashanti Regional Chaplain of the Ghana Prisons Service, who received the items on behalf of the Prisons Command, lauded the church for being responsive to the needs of the inmates.
The Reverend Ismael Yaw Otchere, a Minister of the Cathedral, led prayers for the inmates to rekindle their hope for a better future.
A cross-section of the church’s leadership, including Very Reverend Stephen Kwaku Owusu, Synod Secretary, Kumasi Diocese of the MCG, graced the occasion.
