Accra, Aug. 18, GNA - The Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) on Saturday paid tribute to the memory of former United Nations Secretary General, Mr Kofi Annan who passed on in the early hours of the day.
Delegates at the on-going International conference of Feminist Peace Movement in Africa Forum, stood on their feet for five minutes, after the moderator announced the passing on of Mr Annan.
Mr Annan is said to have died in Switzerland, Saturday morning after a short illness.
Meanwhile the feminist peace movement forum which is being hosted by the WILPF is being attended by peace activists and advocates from across Africa and globally, to critically discuss the root causes of violence and women's role in social transformation, economic justice and peace.
It also aims to be a space to mobilise feminist solidarity for the strong and innovative nonviolent work in Africa.
Issues on the agenda also include women's roles and impact in prevention, peaceful elections, leadership and peace processes.
Dr Ayo Ayoola-Amale, President, WILPF Ghana, in her welcome address explained that the forum will look at the historic and current realities of women working for peace across Africa.
She said "activists are here to use the space to network, connect, and strengthen links within and across the movements for peace for global peace".
The Congress is being held under the theme; "Building a Feminist Peace Movement", and Dr Ayoola-Amale called for the strengthening of feminist civic activism, youth and social movements in the democratic, gender equality and sustainable development.
Mrs Joana Adzoa Opare, Gender Consultant and Activist, recounted the role of women in ensuring peaceful elections.
