Adaklu Waya (V/R), July 28, GNA - Mr Phanuel Kadey Donkor, District Chief Executive for Adaklu, has called on women in the District to take advantage of government’s Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ) Initiative to enhance their lot.
He said the PFJ was not meant for only male farmers and asked women especially young ones to register and help grow the local economy.
Mr Donkor, who was speaking at a sensitization meeting between local government staff and rural women on "Unpaid Care Work", said women constituted about 80 percent of the workforce in agriculture, hence government’s commitment to improve their livelihoods through the initiative.
He said if women in commercial farming embraced the PFJ initiative, they could help modernize agriculture and reinforce it as a major source of employment.
Mr Donkor said the District would acquire 3000 cashew seeds and urged women to come for seedlings and go into cashew production.
Mr Forster Adase-Adjei, Programmes Officer, ActionAid said "Unpaid Care Work" (UCW) was the reason for the poor living condition of women mostly in rural areas and stifle their ability to engage in productive activities.
He said the workload on women was the highest contributor to disempowerment in the districts and called for increased recognition of the UCW and efforts to reduce the burden on women.
Nana Kugbeadzor Bakateyi II, Chief Executive Officer, Global Action for Women Empowerment (GLOWA), said a reduction or redistribution of UCW would promote entrepreneurship among women and also improve their economic development.
She urged women to advocate for this in their homes and communities to help improve access to childcare and other services that would reduce women’s unpaid care work burden.
