Kumasi, July 20, GNA - The College of Engineering, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has invested €5.6 million to re-tool its laboratories.
Professor Mark Adom-Asamoah, the Provost, said this is being done deliberately to bring existing facilities to standard in order to enhance research, practical training and advanced academic work.
The project is a long-term plan by the College, with assistance from some corporate organizations, to expand the scope of engineering education and training of students, giving them hands-on experience on what was being learnt at the classroom.
Prof Adom-Asamoah, who disclosed this at the inauguration of some research and teaching equipment for five laboratories at the College, Kumasi, said the authorities have a vision of becoming one of the top ten engineering universities in Africa by 2025.
“The quality of our graduates is dependent on the calibre of our teaching and the practical training the students receive”, he said adding that the equipment inaugurated only catered for 25 per cent of the needs required in their thematic laboratories.
The items are meant for the College’s Applied Mechanics, Thermofluid, Soil, Aerodynamics and Fluids, Structure and Strength of Materials Laboratories.
Prof Adom-Asamoah expressed gratitude to management of the University for their commitment to open up the frontiers of engineering education for the benefit of the nation.
Prof Kwasi Obiri-Danso, the Vice-Chancellor of KNUST, said the University is pursuing its agenda of increasing enrolment at the College by 10 per cent in the coming years.
He urged the College to work assiduously in developing innovative products to address the engineering needs of the nation.
