Association of Ghana Industries launches 60th anniversary celebrations

Accra, June 29, GNA - The Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) has urged members to fully support and take advantage of government’s industrialisation initiatives to create jobs and enhance economic development.

Dr Yaw Adu Gyamfi, President of the AGI, who made the call, said the Association was not only in support of the initiatives but as much as possible, was getting actively involved in government projects to ensure that members benefit fully.

He was speaking at the 60th anniversary launch of the Association on the theme: “Transforming the Ghanaian Economy through Industrialisation.”

Dr Gyamfi expressed gratitude to government for involving the AGI in many of the reforms it had embarked on, especially the interventions to check malpractices at the ports.

“It is also our expectation that the formation of the Ghana International Trade Commission, a key institution in checking unfair trade practices will inure to the benefit of the Ghanaian private sector,” he said.

He said a fair competition would ensure growth of local industry, adding that, AGI would support policies that tend to reduce the cost of doing business in Ghana.

“I believe it is only a private sector led industrial development with mutual support from government that will accelerate and deliver the required transformation of the Ghanaian economy,” Dr Gyamfi said.

He said the current structure of an import-based economy was not what Ghana needed, adding that,  high imports impact hugely on our macroeconomic stability, job creation prospects, port logistics management and local capacity development as a country.

Launching the anniversary, Mr Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanten, Minister of Trade and Industry, urged the private sector to take advantage of the stable macro-economy to improve and expand their businesses.

He said government was working to speed up the level of industrialisation through key initiatives such as the One District One Factory and the stimulus packages.

Chief Executive Officer of the Association, Seth Twum Akwaboah, said many activities would be held to mark the anniversary both at the regional and national levels, including INDUTECH Fair in Kumasi and the Annual General Meeting in Accra.

The Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) is a non-profit organization, registered in Ghana. It was established in 1957 and incorporated in 1958 by a group of indigenous manufacturers led by Dr (Mrs) Esther Ocloo.
