Kete- Krachi (V/R), May 11, GNA - World Vision International, Ghana, a child focused and Christian humanitarian organization has established child protection committees in the Krachi East and West Districts in the Volta Region.
The Committees were formed in line with the operational plan of the child and family welfare policy and are to help fight child abuses in the Districts.
Mr Richmond Afful Boateng, Krachi West District Coordinating Director, who inaugurated the Committees, said cases of child slavery were embarrassing the districts and charged the Committees to help curb the practice.
He said despite efforts by the two Assemblies to promote education, many children were out of school and engaged in economic activities and called for concerted efforts to keep children in school.
Mr Edward Owulah, Krachi Cluster Programmes Manager, World Vision, said poverty was becoming generational due to lack of protection for children and asked the committees to identify children at risk for support.
He expressed worry about increasing cases of child marriage in the Districts and said "the only advantage in child marriage is that it is cheap," and called for stakeholder support to end the practice.
Mr Israel Akrobortu, Regional Director, Department of Children, who took members of the Committees through a three-day training on child protection asked them to engage the communities and identify child protection issues for redress.
He asked them to form community child protection teams to serve as watchdogs in the communities to ensure that children enjoyed their rights to the fullest.
