Accra, April 13, GNA-The Zonta Club of Accra II in collaboration with the Australian Aid and the GCB Bank has refurbished the Korle-Bu Hospital Chenard Ward to improve health delivery.
Mrs Margaret Martin-Daniels, President of the Club, said the refurbishment was part of the Club’s corporate social responsibilities to respond to the needs of society especially the Hospital, when the executive assumed office.
She said the Club launched a project fund to raise money for the refurbishment through the support of the Australian Direct Aid Programme and the GCB Bank.
Mrs Martin-Daniels said the Club as a service organisation was interested in the affairs of women, stressing that the gesture was to provide some relief to the women, especially those admitted to the Ward.
“In undertaking this project, the Club and Dr Ali Samba of the Gynaecology and the Obstetrics Department, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for 10 years, which enjoined the Club to follow up with the rehabilitation of the Ward,” she added.
Mr Andrew Barnes, the Australian High Commissioner to Ghana, said the project formed part of one of the 22 life transformation projects under the Australian Direct Aid Programme to support development activities in the country.
He said the project would help facilitate quality care and delivery for patients and would continue to support initiatives that would bring relief to patients for peaceful and better existence.
The Australian expressed concern about the abuse of request for support of basic infrastructural projects, adding that the refurbishment of the Ward should be the prerogative of government not the private enterprises.
He urged the authorities to take good care of the facility and exhibit proper maintenance measures to ensure that the ward was kept clean.
Mrs Elizabeth Bruce, Director of Pharmacy, Korle-Bu Hospital, who represented the Chief Executive Officer of the Hospital, commended the organisations for extending their hands to support in the rehabilitation of the Ward.
She said the Hospital had lots of infrastructural difficulties but were handicapped due to unavailability of funds.
Mrs Bruce mentioned that the Hospital as part of its strategic plans would upgrade all its units which were in a deplorable state to meet the required and acceptable standard.
She appealed to other corporate bodies to come to their aid and support them financially to undertake rehabilitation projects in the Hospital.
