Dormaa-Ahenkro, April 13, GNA - Eighty-two apprentices have been awarded certificates after undergoing vocational and technical skills training under the Sinapi Aba Trust (SAT) Youth Apprenticeship Programme at a graduation ceremony at Dormaa-Ahenkro in Brong-Ahafo Region.
The graduates, comprising 18 males and 64 females from Dormaa and Berekum acquired skills in masonry, pastries, dressmaking and hairdressing for a period of three and half years under the tutelage of qualified masters to enable them to start their own businesses.
In an address, Mr. Samuel K. Addo, the Dormaa Central Municipal Coordinating Director, advised the graduates to make good use of the skills acquired profitably.
He said creating jobs through skills development had been a priority of the government, adding that, the addition of new programmes like the Planting for Food and Jobs among other social and economic interventions to the Youth Employment Scheme was a demonstration of government commitment to bridge the unemployment gap.
"Though some progress has been made, a lot still has to be done. It is disheartening a lot of our youth wake up each day and spend precious times looking for non-existent jobs, Mr. Addo said.
"It is for this reason that we welcome this intervention by Sinapi Aba Savings and Loans, aimed at addressing this challenge we face as a nation and Municipality. We thank you for complimenting the efforts of the government", he added.
Madam Margaret Owusu Asare, the Youth Apprenticeship Programme Coordinator of the SAT said the 18 out of the 100 apprentices dropped out due to various reasons, including pregnancy.
She said the trainees also benefited from other workshops organised by the Trust in collaboration with the Ghana Health Service, the National Board for Small Scale Industries (NBSSI) and the National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI).
Mad. Asare said about GHC4, 000.00 was spending on each of the beneficiaries.
Mrs. Theodosia Jackson, Board Member of SAT entreated the beneficiaries to live godly lives, stressing that their promotion and advancement in life was only attainable by being God fearing and hard working.
