Accra, Mar. 5, GNA - The Metropolitan Security Committee in Accra in collaboration with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) have agreed to work together to ensure the attainment of the President’s vision of making the Metropolis the cleanest city.
The collaboration is aimed at ensuring effective management of environmental sanitation as well as prosecution of sanitary offenders to improve and reversed the poor attitude of the people towards the environment.
As part of measures to bring sanity in Accra, a special Task Force comprising Metro Guards and the Police has been formed to arrest and prosecute sanitary offenders, especially people who would litter the streets of Accra.
Traders and stores owners have been advised to register with the accredited waste management companies in their communities in order to avoid arrest, prosecution or embarrassment.
The Task Force would also carry a day and night operations to monitor the activities of the traders, operators who use tricycles.
Mr Mohammed Adjei Sowah, Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), in an interview with the Ghana News Agency said, “we are sending a signal to residents in Accra that in pursuit to make the city clean the security agencies have agreed to support our efforts”.
He said, “our enforcement drive will not accept any excuses from anyone since the education alone is not enough to change the attitude of the residents”.
He said the AMA had taken a number of interventions to help improve the sanitation condition, adding that “the sanitation in Accra had reduced drastically by 30 per cent due to education on the need for people to cultivate proper sanitation behaviour at all times”.
“Members of the community were force to take part in massive clean-up exercise as a way of keeping our surroundings clean and living healthy hence the reduction in refuse collection to ensure improved sanitation in the communities”, he said.
He warned that the Task Force would be deployed with support from the Police onto the streets for everyone to adhere to the sanitation bye-laws in the metropolis.
Deputy Commissioner of Police and Greater Regional Commander, Mr George Mensah, gave the assurance that the MESEC will fully support the exercise.
In another development, Mr Adjei Sowah toured some markets in Accra to also access the sanitation situation there and how best traders adhere to the bye-laws.
Areas where the MCE toured were Makola, Agbogbloshie, Yam Markets and the union sellers at Abossey Okai.
