Goripie, (U/W), March 12, GNA – The Department of Gender in the Upper West Region has called for tenacity among stakeholders in accelerating gender parity to achieve a transformed society.
The Department believes that gender parity will not happen overnight, hence, the need for a collective action and shared responsibility coupled with bold and pragmatic measures to accelerate gender parity.
Madam Charity Batuure, the Acting Upper West Regional Director of the Department of Gender made the call during a community durbar to mark the International Women’s Day celebration at Goripie in the Wa East District.
She said this year’s International Women’s Day celebration campaign theme: “Women Too: Press for Progress to Develop Ghana” provided a unified direction to guide and galvanise collective action.
“The campaign theme rather marks the beginning of work for us all as stakeholders to design more gender-focused initiatives to address the issues of women”, she said.
Madam Batuure said that globally, women’s involvement in civil liberties, building communities and providing protection at various situations was commendable.
She however said that there was still a long way to go before women got equal rights to represent leadership and took charge of powerful positions, be it in government or corporate organisations.
Madam Elham Mumuni, Gender and Women Empowerment Manager for the Centre for Indigenous Knowledge and Organisational Development (CIKOD) underscored the importance of women empowerment, saying it often resulted in strong families and communities.
Madam Ruby Ali, Zonal Coordinator, Amnesty International Ghana urged women to be strong and fight for their rights in society while giving their husbands the needed respect in order to earn their support in the fight.
