Accra, Mar. 01, GNA - The second edition of the Asante Akyem Marathon has been scheduled for 2nd April, 2018.
The marathon which would cover a distance of 42 kilometers, is opened both male and women from every part of the country.
The annual event, will commence from Oyoko to Agogo in the Ashanti region.
The Asante Akyem Marathon Challenge, is an annual marathon spearheaded by Mr Kwadwo Baah Agyemang, Board Chairman for the National Sports Authority (NSA) and a former Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North Constituency and SportsLife, a sports promotion, marketing and event management.
According to Mr Baah Agyemang, the marathon is to provide another platform for competition for the long distance runners in the country, help unearth talents, nurture and develop them for national events.
Mr Baah Agyemang said awards would be given to the first to the tenth athletes, with the youngest athlete participating in the competition also getting an awarded.
Mr. Fuse ink Bawa, General Secretary for the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA) said, his outfit had given the event its full backing.
The maiden event, which saw William Amponsah from Swedru winning had as part of his prize participated in the 2018 edition of the prestigious Dubai Marathon and would also run at the Lagos Marathon.
According to the event organizers, William Amponsah has been added to the National U-20 team that will represent Ghana at the IAAF Championship in Finland in July, 2018 and this should serve as a motivation for this year’s participants.
This year’s marathon is fully supported by the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA), National Sports Authority (NSA), the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) and the Ministry of Youth and Sports would start from Oyoko near Effiduase, through to Wonoo, Begoro, Kumawu and finish at Agogo Lorry Park.
