After the Electoral Commission representative had finished declaring the results, fans and adherents of Dennis Amfo-Sefah, alias Nana Boakye, glutted some of the principal streets of the Harbour city, jubilating for his victory.
Mr Amfo-Sefah had come out victorious in a keenly contested election in which he had beaten his closest contender with only 18 votes.
He garnered 391 of the votes as against 373 votes by Kwesi Poku Bosompem, his main contender.
Even though other contestants for various positions, including Hector Tagoe, who re-contested the Constituency Secretary post as an incumbent, Ms Edem Attipoe, Chairperson of the Tema Noble Ladies group who contested for the Women’s Organiser position, and Abeiku Mills who contested for the Organizer position, had won, it was the supporters of Nana Boakye who commanded the bragging right.
Some swamped parts of some principal streets of Tema and danced their hearts out while others chanted victory songs.
The keenly contested election was peaceful and was attended by party big wigs including; the Members of Parliament for Tema West and Tema Central, Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah and Kofi Brako, alias K.B. respectively.
Other heavy weights in attendance were Mr Abraham Ossei Aidooh, former Majority Leader and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs under former President Kufuor, the Metropolitan Chief Executive for Tema, Felix Mensah Nii Annang-La and the Greater Accra regional Coordinator for the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) Kwabena Archibald.
Others were; Hopeson Adoryeh, a Deputy Coordinator for National Security in charge of Airports and Mr Henry Osei Owusu, former Constituency Secretary for Tema West.
At the close of polls, Mr Amfo-Sefah who was tipped to win by landslide only managed to beat his closest opponent with 18 votes, sending shockwaves down the spine of many of his supporters.
Even so, the results did not deter his supporters from taking to the streets to toot their victory songs and dance their hearts out.
Mr Amfo-Sefah, the Tema West NPP Constituency Chairman-elect, promised to work to close the ranks of the party’s members in the constituency for victory in 2020.
He accordingly asked all his opponents to switch out of campaign mood and join him in the quest to get the NPP retained in the next general election.
An Executive Member of Tema East NDC, Mr. Stephen Ashitey Adjei, alias Mo shake, who was at the function on an invitation said “ I’m also a mainstream politician and would first of all like to commend Mr. Kwesi Poku Bosompem, the one who lost honourably, for his unique fighting spirit, I am not flabbergasted because comments by Lawyer Abraham Ossei Aidooh, a member of the Parliamentary Service Board, and former Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Mr. Kwabena Archibald, Greater Accra Regional Organizer of the NPP and NADMO Coordinator for the Region and Mr. Okyere Danso Dennis, MASLOC Coordinator for Greater Accra earlier on at the TDC Club House suggested that Nana Boakye is a very good person whose contribution to the party cannot be measured.
“So it makes sense to believe that the decision to elect Nana Boakye as Tema West Chair was based on sound tactical political judgement in order for Mr Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah to retain his parliamentary seat.”
