Tamale, Feb.5, GNA - The Northern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) on Monday launched “Operation Calm Lives” to restore calm in the Region to enable people to go about their duties without fear or panic.
It is also to demonstrate the readiness of the security agencies to deal with miscreants who would engage in various forms of crimes as well as galvanise public support for security agencies to maintain absolute peace.
The launch of “Operation Calm Lives” was preceded by a route march by security agencies through some principal streets of the Tamale Metropolis.
Mr Salifu Saeed, the Northern Regional Minister and Chairman of the REGSEC, assisted by heads of security agencies in the Region, launched the Operation in Tamale, saying it signified the determination of the Government and security agencies to provide a secured atmosphere for all.
The “Operation Calm Lives” is in response to some distasteful incidences involving the robbery of filling stations, mobile money operators, residential areas and highways in the Region, some of which led to loss of lives.
Mr Saeed said: “We are here today to declare that the days of fear are over and our security agencies are coming out strongly to deal effectively with the perpetrators of these condemnable acts.”
He said: “The launch of Operation Calm Lives should send the strongest indications to those nation wreckers that their days are numbered and we will not allow anyone or group of persons to foment trouble be it robbery, chieftaincy, religious or political confusion.”
As part of the Operation Calm Lives, the Government has provided a number of pick-up vehicles to the security agencies in the Region to facilitate their operations to ensure success.
Mr Saeed called on all interest groups to support the security agencies to foster the needed peace to promote development.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Patrick Adusei Sarpong, the Northern Regional Police Commander, urged all to be conscious of their security and protect themselves as security agencies stepped in to complement their efforts.
He gave the assurance that the security personnel were more dedicated than before and would ensure peace in the Region, warning criminals to stay off crimes as they would be dealt with ruthlessly when caught.
Gukpe-Naa, Alhassan Abdulai, Paramount Chief of Tamale, who spoke through his representative, expressed the support of traditional authorities to the Operation Calm Lives and called on all to play their part by not shielding criminals to ensure peace.
He called on political leaders and chiefs amongst other influential leaders to stop interfering in the affairs of security agencies in the Region to boost their morale to perform their duties effectively.
