Accra, Feb 02, GNA – “Go Get Them” Wheelchair Racing Club, a para sports club, has received support from Ethiopian Airlines, ahead of their upcoming Outiniqua wheelchair challenge in George, South Africa.
The airline company has supported the team with three airline tickets for the athletes, who would be competing in the event, which commences on 18th February.
According to the founder of the club and three-time Paralympian, Raphael Bostyo Nkegbe, the support from Ethiopian Airline, was in fulfilment of a promise, they made to the team last year.
“Ethiopian Airlines has over the years believed in the club’s vision of giving young athletes the opportunity to compete. They sponsored two athletes to Outiniqua Wheelchair tournament last year, myself and Ayishetu Seidu.
“She won gold and I won silver. When we came, we presented the medals to the management of Ethiopian Airlines and they promise to be part of the club this year as well. So they just fulfilled the promise they made to us to sponsor us this year,” Mr Nkegbe told the GNA Sports.
He was grateful that the company increased the number from two to three athletes, adding that it would go a long way to motivate them to perform better.
“They have increased the number from two last year to three this year. Last year we came back with one gold and one silver. We hope to at least maintain or win more medals this year with this support.”
He called on other corporate bodies to come their aid, as they continue their preparation ahead of the challenge.
The “Go Get Them” wheelchair racing club is the first wheelchair club in Ghana and aims to develop young and upcoming disabled athletes.
The club has competed in the last four editions of the Outiniqua wheelchair challenge, winning a total of four gold medals, two silver and a bronze medal over the period of participation.
The event, Outiniqua wheelchair challenge is an annual wheelchair race exclusively for disabled athletes.
