Savelugu (N/R), Dec 19, GNA - The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the Savelugu/Nanton Municipality (S/NM) has carried out sensitization programmes on tax compliance in the municipality with the view to increase national revenue through tax collection.
The three week-long sensitization programmes, which ended at the weekend, were also to educate taxable persons/entities of their tax obligations to the state and how to honour them.
The campaign covered market places, lorry stations, faith-based and identifiable groups and dawn to dusk broadcasts in selected communities on the theme: “Our Taxes – Our Future”.
Groups targeted as part of the campaign included artisans, transport operators, faith-based organizations, traditional authorities, opinion leaders, women’s groups, economic groups and taxable entities where issues discussed included the need to pay tax, correlation between taxes and national development and rights of the tax payer.
Mr Alhassan Jibreel, S/NM Director of NCCE, assisted by staff of NCCE in the Municipality in collaboration with Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), carried out the campaign educating the targeted groups that it was a civic duty for citizens and a requirement of law to pay tax.
Mr Jibreel said tax revenue helped government to create jobs as well as provide basic social amenities such as electricity, health facilities, potable water, roads, and schools amongst others, advising all to honour their tax obligations to the state.
He advised all taxable entities and individuals to register with the GRA and pay tax to the state saying “It gives you the authority to demand accountability from office holders.”
Chiefs and Imams at various communities and mosques in the Municipality took turns to advise residents to honour their tax obligations to the state to accelerate development.
