Sunyani, Nov.12, GNA – The ex-servicemen and the security agencies in Brong-Ahafo on Saturday converged in front of the Veterans Association of Ghana (VAG) hall by the Sunyani Municipal Assembly to observe the 72nd Remembrance Day Service in the Region.
A contingent of over 100 officers, men and women of the security agencies –the Military, Police, Prisons, Fire Service, the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority and Immigration formed a parade under the command of Captain Eric Kuntu-Blankson of the Third Battalion of Infantry, Sunyani to mark the occasion.
Four wreaths were laid respectively by Lawyer Kwaku Asomah-Cheremeh, the Regional Minister, Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Nash Kubi Adjetey, Third Garrison Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police Mr. Kwame Takyi Poku, the Regional Police Commander and Nana Bofo Bene IV, the Paramount Chief of Dwenem-Awasu Traditional Area in the Jaman South District and Vice-President of the Regional House of Chiefs.
The Remembrance Day, which falls on November 11 annually, is set aside to remind Ghanaian and the world at large about veterans and others who lost their lives in the World War I and II.
The day referred to as Poppy Day, has been observed by Commonwealth of Nations member states since the end of the First World War in memory of their nationals who were part of their Armed Forces but died in their line of duty.
The Armistice, which ended the First World War, became effective at 1100 hours of November 11, 1918. After the Second World War, the Armistice Day was renamed Remembrance Day to remember those who died in both wars and instituted as a National Day of Remembrance.
