Vocational and Training students urged to save towards business ventures

Accra, Oct. 31, GNA - Mr Joshua Mensah, the Executive Director of the Foundation for Financial Inclusion (FFI), has urged some students of Technical and Vocational Educational and Training (TVET) institutions to start investing towards their own businesses.

Mr Mensah told students to be boastful of the education and training they were receiving from the various TVET institutions because they were the fulcrum of the country's economy.

He was speaking at the finals of the maiden Entrepreneurship and Financial Skills Quiz Competition for Vocational and Technical Institutions in the Greater Accra Region organised by the FFI and sponsored by Vodafone Ghana and Union Capital Limited.

Mr Mensah urged the student to build the character of investment saying; “If you do not build the habit of saving and investing, no matter the amount of money you receive, you will still remain poor”.

He indicated that the people who have more money had developed ways of making it but the people who do not have money had beggars’ mentality with the notion that money would just come to them without proper planning.

Mr Mensah indicated that if students kept wasting money on “unworthy ventures”, it would not help in making them financially sound to start their businesses after the completion of their education, adding that it was not about how much you earned but how much you put down that made you rich.

He urged the students to avoid the wastage of time and money because those were very important assets of a person’s life.

Mr Mensah said if you waste time, you would never be able to recover, adding; “If you are suppose to perform a duty and you relent in doing it in a stipulated time, you have wasted that time and it will never come back to you.”

He indicated that there was the need to know the difference between ‘wants’ and ‘needs’ saying, needs were things that you could not do without in life while wants were things that one could live without.

The Quiz Competition was aimed at inculcating the spirit of entrepreneurship in the students and also to help them appreciate the urgent need for entrepreneurs.

At the end of the competition, New Century Career Training Institute came first and won a sponsors package of GHC1000.00 investment with Union Entrepreneurship Scheme (UES).

GH Media Training Institute placed second, with GH¢ 500.00 investment with the UES, while Opportunity Industrialisation Center (OIC) and Young Men Christian Association Technical Training Institute placed third and fourth positions respectively.
