Kumasi, Oct 11, GNA – An NGO, Hope for Future Generations (HFFG), (NGO), has called for a national commitment to stop child marriages, to give protection to girls.
It added that safeguarding the rights of the girl child was critical to their growth and development.
The call was contained in a press statement signed by the Organization’s Executive Director, Mrs. Cecilia Senoo, to mark this year’ international day of the girl, which focuses on empowering girls.
The day had been set aside to highlight the need to invest in girls’ development and to galvanize support for action to address challenges and discrimination against them.
The statement repeated the unwavering determination of the NGO to lead the fight against child marriages.
It condemned the practice, where girls in some communities were forced into early marriages, depriving them of their basic rights to education and health.
The NGO indicated that the way forward to lift women out of poverty and end their economic dependency was to ensure that they pursued academic careers or learned a vocation.
It reminded the government to be guided by African Union’s (AU) four pillars of health and well-being, education and skills development, employment and entrepreneurship; rights, governance and youth empowerment, to reap the full benefits of its youthful population.
