Accra, Sept. 22, GNA -The Global Evangelical Church has awarded scholarships to 30 needy but brilliant students in some tertiary institutions and senior high schools across the country through its GESAM Education Support (GESU) Fund.
The beneficiary students received their bursaries during a brief ceremony held at the Global Evangelical Church, El-Shammah Chapel, Tesano in Accra, in the presence of their families as well as a cross section of members of the Church.
The GESU Fund was started in 2015 for the Global Evangelical Students and Associates Ministry (GESAM), the students’ wing of the Global Evangelical Church which oversees students of the Church in tertiary institutions and senior high schools.
It was established as part of the Church’s efforts to invest in the human resource development of its members and to ensure that their academic aspirations did not become a mirage because of lack of funding.
The 30 students, who are members of the Church and formed the first batch of beneficiaries, came from twenty tertiary institutions and ten senior high schools across the ten regions of Ghana.
The Global Evangelical Church envisioned growing the Fund through investment to yield GH¢250,000.00 by the close of 2018.
Right Reverend Dr Setorwu Kwadzo Ofori, Moderator of the Global Evangelical Church, said Jesus’ mission statement included proclaiming liberty to captives, and “this doesn’t only apply to praying for people to be delivered from demons.
“It also includes helping people and supporting them to be what they should be. It means stretching a hand to a neighbour. It includes supporting students to continue their education,” he said.
The Moderator said the Global Evangelical Church’s approach was holistic with the belief that people needed to be supported to achieve their God-given potentials and talents.
Rt. Rev. Dr. Ofori thanked the leaders, initiators, promoters and all who contributed to the Fund, adding that, “an educated church is a wealthy church, if there is a church that doesn’t want educated people that church will die”.
He called for more support to enable the Church empower the younger generations so that they will have a bright future and not fall prey to vices.
Mr. Ewoenam Kpodo, Chairman of a seven-member Board of Trustees of the Fund, said 149 applications were received from all over the country and outlined the guidelines used in the selection process including academic performance, technical quality and relevance of personal statement and socio-economic background.
Mr Kpodo praised the leadership of the Global Evangelical Church for the support given to the Fund and urged the beneficiaries to work hard to enable them to live meaningful lives in future.
Mr. Carl Banini, a GESU Fund Ambassador, who was the guest speaker, said he fell in love with the project to support the needy but brilliant students because it sought to promote love and the corporate identity of the Church.
Mr. Banini, a Quantity Surveyor by profession, urged the students to make good use of the opportunity given to them by studying hard and by being disciplined, avoid bad company and not yield to negative peer pressure.
Miss Justine Attipoe, a level 300 student of the University of Cape Coast and a beneficiary, on behalf of her colleagues, expressed gratitude to God for enabling the Church to establish the scholarship to cater for the needs of its members.
Miss Attipoe who is pursuing a degree in Molecular Biology, said the financial assistance would inspire them to excel in their studies, live above expectation and fulfil God’s plan for their lives.
Currently, GESAM has over 2,000 members in 32 tertiary institutions and in 30 senior high schools.
