Accra, Sept. 21, GNA - The International Paralympics Committee has postponed the 2017 edition of the World Paralifting and swimming championships.
The championship was scheduled to begin in Mexico City this month, but had to be postponed following Tuesday’s devastating earthquake in the country.
According to a statement released by the IPC the decision was influenced by safety concerns within the host city.
“We would like to inform you that the IPC has postponed the upcoming World Championships in Para powerlifting and Para swimming due to the devastating earthquake that struck Mexico on Tuesday September 19.
“The earthquake caused a humanitarian situation as well as concerns about safety within the city, the IPC in close cooperation with the City of Mexico decided to postpone the event.
"Our decision is to ensure that your safety was not at risk until we are able to confirm that Mexico City had the time to undertake the required structural assessments to the competition venues and accommodation locations and further safety assessments within the city.
"Our wish is for the city to focus all their efforts on the humanitarian situation it faces.
“We ask you again to ensure that your teams do not travel to Mexico and if you have already made the journey, then we have teams on the ground in Mexico to support you if required.
"We would also ask for your understanding and patience in this matter and trust that the IPC will do everything possible within our means to ensure that the financial implications of this decision are minimal.
“We will communicate with you as soon as any decision on rescheduling is made and will keep you informed as regularly as possible of the progress. “the statement ended.
