Atiwa, Aug 18, GNA - The Member of Parliament (MP) for Atiwa East, Mrs Abena Osei-Asare, has called on the people of Kwabeng and its environs to remain calm as the police investigates to unravel the truth relating to the death of people alleged to have been killed by the Vanguard Taskforce.
She said every life mattered and the appealed to the people to allow the law to take its course to establish the truth relating to the death of the four men as there were several reports.
In an interview with the GNA, she indicated that reports showed that the vanguard task force were on duty at a different town and called for calm.
She urged the public to volunteer any information to the police who were handling the investigations.
The MP noted that in consultation with the Vanguard operation commander, on that fateful day, the taskforce had gone to Akrofu, a different town in the area and ended their operation there around 5pm and so “it would be difficult to say authoritatively that the Vanguard Taskforce were involved in the killings” she added.
However she said one of the deceased, Alhaji Danjuma has been identified as a unit committee member of the Kwabeng area, while the three others were suspected to be from Akwatia.
According to police report, around 8am on Sunday, one Isaac Annor came to report to the police that one of the deceased, Yaw with three others were in charge of a low loader vehicle which was carting an excavator machine from Extra Gold Mining concession at Akukuso, near Kwabeng.
That on reaching a section of the road between the main junction and Akukuso, they were reported to have encountered the Operation Vanguard Taskforce, so the operator and the other occupants abandoned the vehicle with the engine running and took to their heels, but could not be traced.
The police then proceeded to the scene of the incident, combed the area and found an abandoned mining pit filled with water, divers were engaged and they retrieved the four bodies namely Yaw 25, Alhaji 22, Idrisu Issifu alias Danjuma 38 and T.T 32.
According to the police report the deceased persons were all wearing T-shirts and pair of trousers with blood and foam oozing from their mouths.
The MP noted that from her consultation with the Vanguard Operation Commander in the area, on that fateful day, the taskforce had gone to Akrofu, a different town in the constituency and ended their operation around 5pm and so “it would be difficult to say authoritatively that the vanguard taskforce killed them”.
Meanwhile, the Vanguard Taskforce had denied their involvement whiles the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Police Hospital Morgue in Accra, pending autopsy.
