Tafo (E/R), July 24, GNA - Tree Global Ghana, an international tree nursery company, has distributed a total of 565,000 high yielding cocoa seedlings to farmers in five cocoa growing regions to improve production.
This year’s distribution was an improvement of last year’s 500,000 improved seedlings.
The gesture was part of a project by Tree Global Ghana, in partnership with Mondelez International Cocoa Life, a cocoa processing company and the largest buyer of Ghana’s cocoa, to help farmers to produce quality, innovative and high yielding cocoa seedlings to the “Cocoa Life” districts where Mondalez operates.
The beneficiary districts included New Juaben, West Akim, Suhum and Fanteakwa in the Eastern Region, Amansie West in the Ashanti Region, Wassa East in the Western Region and Asunafo North in the Brong-Ahafo Region.
Mr Agbeko Ashiagbor, the Assistant Nursery Manager, announced this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at a media outreach programme in the Eastern Region to raise awareness on the country’s sustainability interventions in the cocoa sector.
He said the collaboration with Mondelez International had positioned the company to nurse the seedlings in recyclable plastic pots which were environmentally friendly and could be reused for a period of six years.
Mr Ashiagbor posited that the company was created to provide high performance seedlings to large scale projects, focused on agriculture and environmental restoration; as well as sustainable timber and biomass to increase the economic and environmental value of the project.
He said cocoa farmers were trained to adhere to the instructions on how to plant and water seedlings to create the needed impact expected.
He encouraged farmers to patronise Tree Global seedlings for its high survivability, which yields within a period of 18 months; and also urged the youth to venture into cocoa farming to sustain the sector and improve their livelihood.
