Daboase (WR) June 16, GNA - Mr Wilson Arthur, the District chief Executive (DCE) of the Wassa East district, has said it is his vision is to lead the Wassa East District to become a model rural district in the country.
To achieve this, he said, the district would be guided by a four year strategic development plan.
Mr Arthur said this during the 6th ordinary meeting of the 7th session of the Wassa East District assembly at Daboase in the Western Region.
He said the four area councils made up of Daboase, Ekutuase, Ateiku and Enyinabrim were being resourced to energize Unit Committee members in all the communities to live up to their responsibilities.
“Nananom, community leaders, family leaders, the clergy, teachers and especially our women farmers and youth are going to experience a new Wassa East District Assembly Service soon”
He said the people should expect more collaboration with the community information centres across the district to help disseminate the assembly’s projects and programmes, adding that this would go alongside with the usual engagement of Assembly members with their electorates.
Mr Arthur said with the support of the electorates the assembly would work hard to create a prosperous local economy anchored by local champion investors, “we will develop our tourism, culture, creative art and sports industries.
On Revenue, the DCE said the total revenue received by the assembly in 2016 stood at GH?5,480,474.10 representing 57 per cent of the estimated amount of GH?9,637,968.94 resulting in a budget shortfall of GH?4,157,494.94.
He said out of the total revenue, government grants and other receipts including the district assemblies’ common fund amounted to GH?4,275,547.53 while revenue from traditional sources stood at GH?1,204,926.57 representing 22 per cent.
Mr Arthur said the assembly approved a revenue estimate of GH?8,065,569.45 for this year and that internally generated fund component of the estimated revenue was GH?572,360.00, out of which GH?135, 509, 42 has been collected between January and March.
The DCE was however not happy with the revenue performance of the various area councils and stressed that if the situation was not properly addressed it would bring the assembly’s strategic plans to a halt.
On roads, he said with interventions from COCOABOD and the assembly’s own resources there was an improvement in the district roads and announced that the upgrading of the Daboase-Ateiku 52 kilometre has been completed.
He said the district had been generally calm but subtle chieftaincy disputes, illegal chain saw operations and galamsey activities continue to be a threat to the security of the district.
He said proactive measures have been put in place to promptly respond to any threats and help maintain peace and order in the communities, adding that the assembly had formed District Mining Taskforce with the mandate to educate the public on the dangers of illegal mining, the processes in acquiring valid small scale mining licence.
