Accra, June 15, GNA - Mr Kofi Anani, The Executive Secretary of Ghana Refugee Board (GBR), has called on the media to increase its coverage on refugees’ issues to enlighten the public.
He said the media being an important stakeholder could bring up the issues about refugees and therefore tasked the media to cover all aspects of refugee issues in the country.
Mr Anani briefing the media in Accra on Thursday on the activities slated to mark this year’s World Refugee Day, urged the media not to only report on the plight of refugees but extend it to other positive aspects of their existence.
“It is not only the plight that we have to focus on, but capture the good things about the refugee situation as well,” he said.
He said the GBR and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) had collaborated to provide assistance and support to the refugees in Ghana.
Nii Ako Sowa, the Communications and Public Associate of UNHCR said Ghana would join the world to celebrate the World Refugee Day on June 20 in all the four Refugee Camps in the country,
The event would be held at Ampain Camp, located in the Ellembelle District in the Western Region, which camps 3,432 refugees from Cote d’Ivoire.
Nii Sowa noted that the ceremony would showcase the positive examples of refugees and nationals living in peaceful coexistence with their education and health services fully integrated in the Ghanaian system.
The World refugee day established by the United Nations is commemorated every year on June 20, to honour the courage, strength and determination of over 65 million people who were forced to flee their homes under threat of persecution, conflict and violence.
This year’s celebration dubbed: “With Refugees” in a bid to lessen the public anxiety, and show the world that concrete solutions were needed to solve the refugee crisis.
