Accra, June 14, GNA - Justice V.C.R.A.C Crabbe, a Professor of Law, on Wednesday advised Ghanaians to respect the presidency no matter the person at the helm of affairs.
He condemned individuals who hurled insults at presidents because of partisan politics adding that self-respect goes a long way to determine what one could say when he or she mounts a political platform.
Prof. Crabbe made the call in his contribution to a panel discussion at the 2017 National Dialogue organised by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) on the theme: “Restoring the Ghanaian Identity: Our Values; Our Passion’’.
The forum provided a platform for Ghanaians to discuss values that define them as a people and called for the restoration of these values to engender national development.
Prof. Crabbe cited the former US President, Richard Nixon, who was scandalised in the Watergate case in the 1970’s and supposed to go to prison but an American citizen took the blame and went to jail to save the dignity of the presidency.
He said presidents, the world over, were accorded high respect and called on Ghanaians to adopt such attitudes to bring dignity and respect to the seat.
Touching on mob action that people engaged in with impunity in the country, Prof. Crabbe called for collective efforts by all to ensure that the rule of law works adding that people must be willing to give evidence when they witness such heinous crimes.
He cited instances where the police had difficulty getting people to give evidence which made some criminals to be let off the hook.
Prof. Crabbe advised parents to inculcate the values of honesty, discipline and tolerance in their children to enable them to grow into responsible citizens to help build an Honorius and stable nation.
“The greatness of our children depends on the virtues that we, as parents, teach them at home. The core fundamental values for the wellbeing of our children must start from the home,” he said.
The event brought together people from all walks of life including security agencies, the diplomatic corps, representatives of religious institutions, traditional rulers, students and members of Parliament.
The participants urged the Government to introduce civic education at the basic level to inculcate civic responsibility in pupils.
