Sunyani, June 14, GNA - Dr Nana Ato Arthur, the Head of Local Government Service (LGS), has called on Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to devise innovative ways of generating revenue locally to speed up development processes.
He said effective and efficient use of Information Communication Technology (ICT) is the best method for revenue mobilization and that ICT based strategies would facilitate identification of properties and recovery resources.
“Engaging in digital mapping systems by the MDAs would help improve revenue source identification and collection, he said.
Dr Arthur was speaking at a forum organised by the LGS in Sunyani and attended by coordinating directors, heads of decentralised departments and agencies, budget officers, engineers, finance officers, internal auditors, environmental health and agric officers.
He said the MMDAs over-reliance on the central government for funding is not the best hence the need for the assemblies to find alternative ways to increase their internally generated funds.
Dr Arthur said government has come out with new decentralization policies and reviewed certain laws to deepen the decentralization system.
He urged workers not to regard postings and transfers as punishment since their services were needed in every part of the country.
Mr Kwaku Asomah- Cheremeh, the Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, said with enough internally generated funds, the assemblies could speed up development process.
He urged the participants to encourage local participation in decision making process at the Assemblies to enhance the local government concept.
Mr Asomah-Cheremeh urged them to exhibit strong ethical standards and support the fight against corruption which has tarnished the image of the LGS.
“You are to be innovative, honest, competent disciplined and exhibit professionalism to discharge your responsibilities effectively and efficiently”, the regional minister said.
Mr Asomah-Cheremeh also urged them to collaborate with their respective Municipal and District Chief Executives and support the implementation of government projects and programmes.
