Accra, June 1, GNA - In a very commiserative mood, Ras Mubarak, Member of Parliament for Kumbugbu, on Thursday almost wept and set the tone for Parliament to condemn the dastardly and cold blooded murder of Captain Maxwell Mahama, which happened last Monday.
“I know the whole House has been deeply saddened by the death of Captain Maxwell Mahama and hope the whole House will join me in condemning the horrific manner of his death” Ras Mubrak said.
Ghana woke up Monday to the shocking news of the lynching of decorated young Captain of the Army by some people in Denkyira Obuasi in the Central Region.
The Ghanaian military officer, said to have been mistaken for an armed robber, was lynched and burnt by some angry youth on Monday morning because he was in possession of a weapon.
The sadistic manner of the lynching has caused an outrage, and Ras Mubarak said his “death is a stark reminder of the very real dangers our men and women in uniform face on daily basis.”
Recounting the commitment of the late soldier to the fight against illegal mining nicknamed “galamsey,” Ras Mubarak eulogized Mahama and described him as having died “a hero, a true Ghanaian hero.”
“He has options, one was to fight back and shoot his way out of danger, but he spared his tormentors and chose to die at their hands rather than shoot his way out of danger. That is the mark of a real soldier.”
Recalling similar incidents elsewhere, Ras Mubarak noted how, “for far too long,” there had been silence of such negatives and wondered the kind of society being built in the nation.
“What kind of society have we become? A bunch of savages who have no regard for the rule of law, have no respect for human life and dignity?” the MP asked.
He called for all efforts by the state not to treat the matter as business as usual but marshal the necessary resources to bring the perpetrators to book.
While commending the Ghana Armed Forces for the professionalism they have so far exhibited, he suggested a state burial with full military honours for late Mahama.
Members of the House unanimously condemned the killing with some suggesting that President Nana Akufo Addo must show the Denkyira Obuasi District Chief Executive the exit for his unsavoury and unguarded comments about the incident.
The House expressed it condolences to the family, wife and children of the late Captain. GNA
