Koforidua, May 30, GNA - The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) shall embark on a sensitization drive in the Eastern Region to create awareness on the need for consumers to check the expiry dates and products with high risks of contamination.
The move follows the disposal of about three metric tons of expired and contaminated products including beverages, alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks, baby foods, medicines and dairy products from supermarkets, shops, filling station marts and pharmacies across the districts in the region.
Mr Samuel Kwakye, the Eastern Regional Director of the FDA, in an interview with the GNA, said in order to prevent consumers from buying unwholesome products it is important that they are sensitized and educated to understand the need for checking for such information.
He said in line with the mandate of the FDA to regulate the safety of foods and drugs as a measure to protect the public, his outfit would focus on education to ensure that people would be alert when buying consumables.
Mr Kwakye said the expiry dates and other information stated on food and drugs were important as once the products expire, some chemicals in the preparation change and become agents of contamination.
He said apart from the expiry dates some conditions also alter the safety of products such as products displayed on the sun and handling and urged the public to desist from buying products exposed for long durations on the sun.
Mr Kwakye said the education and awareness creation would focus on schools such that when the students grow they would appreciate the habit of ensuring that everything they consume is safe.
