Accra, May 22, GNA – Madam Genevieve Basigha, a hearing impaired woman was full of tears of joy as she was declared the overall winner of the MTN Heroes of Change.
She received a cheque prize worth GH¢100,000.00, a plaque and a citation which was presented by Mrs Cynthia Lumor, the Executive Director of the MTN Ghana Foundation.
The event held at the National Theatre in Accra was cheered with musical performances from Kofi Kinatta, Nana Kwame Ampadu, Osei Korankye, gospel musician OJ and was hosted by Kwame Sefa Kayi.
Three other winners- Reverend Father Dr Moses Asaa Awinongya, Reverend Monsignor Alex Bobby Benson and Jack James Dawson won prizes in the education, health and economic empower categories of the programme.
Each of them took home GH¢30,000.00, a trophy and a citation whilst the remaining six finalists also received GH¢10,000.00 each to support their projects in their communities.
They include Joseph Asakibeem, Dr Michael Adusei-Nsowah, Mr Ibrahim Bafara Alhassan, Mr John Amankrah-Essel, Joana Mansah Deegbe, Nana Prof. Osei Kofi Darkwa III.
MTN Heroes of Change is organised by the MTN Ghana Foundation to reward people making positive impact on society through philanthropy, and to encourage them to do more for society
Mrs Lumor commended her for her efforts to train the physically challenged children to contribute to national development.
She said the winners had helped to improve the lives of many others through their humanitarian activities across the country.
Madam Basigha has established a school at Obuasi to assist the deaf and dumb with formal education.
The ecstatic Madam Basigha who spoke through a sign language interpreter thanked God for the success and her devoted staff who supported her throughout the journey.
She competed against nine others, who made it to the grand finale out of the over 1,700 entries that were received but shortlisted to 30 and then to the final 10.
