Bolgatanga, May 21, GNA - Mr Pontius Pilate Apaaby Baba, the Upper East Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has said the sense of nationalism strengthens development.
The Regional Director made the observation when the Commission organised separate fora for the Police and Fire Service Officers in Bolgatanga as a prelude to this year’s NCCE constitutional week often organised by the Commission annually.
The Regional Director, who spoke on the theme “Restoring our Ghanaian Identity, Our Values, Our passion”, said it was unfortunate that Ghanaian cultural values were being over-shadowed by other cultures which were viewed to be more fashionable and superior.
He said a collective sense of unity , hard work, prudence , justice and fairness, traditional values, Communal spirit , respect for national symbols and institutions such as the national flag and coat of arms, honesty and integrity, humility , decency and decorum in language were some of the core values needed to propel and accelerate development of the country.
He said the first President of the Republic of Ghana, Dr Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah and other founding fathers of the country stood for those good values, which saw the country at that time making progress in terms of development.
He called on all Ghanaians to reflect on the contents of the National Anthem and the Ghana Pledge and to put them into practice at both work places and whatever positions they were entrusted with.
Whilst calling on all heads of institutions to help deal with issues of corruption within their working environment, the Regional Director stressed the need for them to begin to implement the National Anti-Corruption Action Plan (NACAP) at their respective working places.
The Upper East Regional Police Commander, DCOP Vincent Redeemer Dedjoe, who commended the Commission for reminding the police officers to exhibit high and good values in executing their duties, told the officers that it paid to live by those values.
He said the police service had a core duty to protect lives and property and noted that in dispensing these duties, some police officers might go astray and stressed that the forum would remind such officers to change their attitude.
