Accra, May 16, GNA - The Australia High Commission in Ghana has presented a cheque for GH¢25, 000 each to the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) and the Azumah Nelson Foundation.
The short Presentation was held at the GOC Secretariat on Monday.
According to the Australia High Commissioner, Andrews Barnes, the presentation was part of proceeds realized from the Commonwealth Games Dinner Gala held at his residence in March when the Queens Baton Relay touched down in Ghana.
He said, at the Commonwealth Dinner Gala, the Commission received GH50, 000 which has been presented to the two bodies.
The High Commissioner explained that the presentation to the GOC was to assist them in their preparation towards the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia.
Speaking at the event, the GOC President, Mr. Ben Nunoo Mensah, thanked the High Commissioner for his outfit’s assistance towards Ghana’s participation for the Games and was optimistic that, Ghana’s athletes would perform better as compared to the previous Games held in Glasgow, 2014.
he GOC President reiterated that, Ghana would start preparation soon and was hopeful that many but quality athletes would win medals to hoist the flag of Ghana.
He said “we believe in quality and it wouldn’t be just about the number but quality athletes who can do it”.
He affirmed that, he would be liaising with the Australia High Commission for more assistance to the GOC.
Mr. Nunoo Mensah revealed that, a fundraising drive has commenced to assist Ghana’s preparation towards the Games and urged corporate entities to emulate the Australian High Commission’s gesture.
The Ghanaian boxing legend Nelson expressed excitement for the donation and assured that the money would be put to good use.
The High Commissioner remains optimistic that team Ghana would be successful by bringing gold medals from the showpiece.
