Essam (W/R), May 03, GNA - The Management and staff of Essam Government Hospital, Sefwi, in the Western Region have engaged in a cleanup exercise as part of activities to mark the fifth anniversary of the Hospital.
The staff worked on the compound and various units of the Hospital, cleaning beds, trolleys, cupboards, tables, chairs, instruments, walls and floors.
As part of its infection prevention and control practices, such exercises are carried out on monthly basis.
Dr Emmanual K. Coomson, the Medical Superintendent of the Hospital, said the facility faced numerous problems including the huge debt that the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) owed it.
He said the over 10 months’ claims arrears submitted to the NHIA was making work very difficult.
He expressed the hope that it would be cleared soon, adding that although “the Hospital had operated for five years now; it had not been commissioned yet. We do not have the full complement of staff as a Class ‘A’ district hospital yet.
“Though Out Patience Department attendance increased from 24,129 in 2014 to 28,257 the infrastructure had remained the same,” he said.
Dr Coomson said: “the Hospital is full. During peak seasons, clients, especially pregnant women in labour have to make do with mattresses on the floor due to inadequate space”.
He said the Hospital needed to expand to create wards for adult females who currently shared the maternity block and for adult males who also shared the kids block.
Other units needed were laundry, kitchen, mortuary, radio-ultrasound unit, accommodation for critical staff, among others.
He appealed to the government and corporate institutions to come to the aid of the Hospital either in cash or in kind.
