Accra, April 27, GNA - The 2016 McDan Open defending champion Sara Adegoke from Nigeria has admitted that the fifth edition of the McDan Tennis championship has been tougher and intense compared with the previous years.
The defending champion and the number one seed eliminated Ghanaian born Indian Manya Viswanath 6-2, 6-3 to book a place in the quarter finals.
In an interview with the GNA Sports, she said the tournament had seen a great improvement with the increase in the number of players as well as the competition.
"We have had other good players this year and my 15-year-old opponent was very good, which tells how intense the tournament has been this year. The year’s tournament has been more competitive in both the women and men categories this year."
She thanked the organizers for a well organised tournament so far and appealed to them to increase the prize money for the ladies category.
"I thank McDan for adding women to the tournament because in some other tournaments women are excluded. I think they have done well but I hope they will increase the prize money for the women to encourage us." she added.
The McDan Tennis championship has lived up to expectation with the stiff competition in almost all the matches played so far.
In the women’s division, Ivorian Kouadio Ahu Zai Amadine, Ghanaian trio of Annette Cruickshank, Emma Cudjo and Cindy Aidoo, with Nigerian duo, Angel Macleod and Lizzy Airhunmwunde,as well as Beninois Follykuaye Esperance all progressed to the quarter final stage of the competition.
In the men category, the Number one seed Thomas Sethodji from Togo faced tough opposition from Francis Akpese before edging his way to the quarter finals.
Others who also booked a place in the quarter final include Joel Meda, Wisdom Na-Adjrago, Bernard Dugbah, Jeff Bagerbaseh, and Felix Hounkpevi.
