Wa, April 24, GNA – The Upper West Regional Secretariat of the National Youth Authority has launched a pilot project in the Wa Municipality for the youth to cultivate farms to produce groundnuts.
This is in line with the NYA quest to empower and support the youth to venture into the agricultural sector to provide employment for themselves and others as well as produce for national consumption.
Mr. Sumaila Shaibu Poleenee, Speaker of the Upper West Regional Youth Parliament in a statement in Wa, noted that Mr. Emmanuel Asigiri, Chief Executive Officer of the NYA, said the Authority was engaging with partners to invest in the youth in agriculture in the country.
It said the youth would be supported in the production of shea butter, groundnuts and ‘dawadawa’, which would benefit the three regions in the north.
The statement also indicated that the National Youth Authority would institute an annual awards scheme for Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDCEs) as part of its commitment towards youth development in the country.
It said the awards scheme would recognise MMDCEs who were working toward the youth development in their respective districts and regions through their budgeting and planning process.
“The best performing district in each region for youth development would be identified and awarded at a national platform.
“This award scheme intends to motivate the various MMDCEs to factor youth-focused development plans into their plans at the local levels,” it explained.
The statement indicated that other activities the Authority would institute included National Youth Parliament to bring together members of the Regional Youth Parliament to share idea on youth and national development.
Others were, to resource and properly decentralize the National Youth Authority by creating district offices and to create youth development centre to assist in carrying out youth activities within the Region.
The statement urged government to adequately resource and empower the NYA to fulfil its mandate of youth development and empowerment for the benefit of the nation.
