Tamale, March 31, GNA - The Tamale Metropolitan Assembly (TaMA) is to embark on a massive sanitisation exercise within the central business district of the city to bring about discipline, sanity and orderliness on the roads, devoid of congestion and filth.
The exercise, which begins on May 15, will involve the removal of vendors and hawkers on the streets around and behind the Central Market, from VRA area to Sakasaka and from the central business district to Aboabu Traffic Light.
Mr Musah Issah Salifu, Public Relations Officer of TaMA, who announced this at a press briefing in Tamale on Wednesday, said the exercise was in line with efforts to instill discipline along the principal streets of Tamale, by ensuring that various public infrastructure outlay within the metropolis were used only for purposes for which they were built.
Mr Salifu said the exercise was also in line with the vision of the new Mayor of TaMA to provide the needed leadership for the economic transformation of the metropolis through increased investments, which would be geared towards providing opportunities for job creation and employment.
He added that sanitising the central business district of Tamale would create the congenial atmosphere that would boost investor confidence in the metropolis and disabuse the minds of people on the negative perception or prejudice being held on to by many about Tamale.
Currently, the central business district of Tamale is choked as vendors have abandoned market stalls and have poured onto the streets coupled with hawkers to do brisk business.
Mr Salifu said authorities of TaMA had held consultations with chiefs and religious leaders in Tamale about the intended exercise, adding that, political parties, youth groups and the leadership of traders’ association in Tamale would also be consulted on the exercise.
He said TaMA had put in place relief strategies to mitigate the impact of the intended exercise, which included relocation of vendors and traders to designated markets places and areas they previously occupied before the reconstruction of the markets.
Other mitigating measures included reorganisation of the satellite markets at Kukuo and Kakpagyili for use by traders, and consideration of use of the Jubilee Park for weekend market at a fee and also as parking space for shoppers at a fee.
Mr Salifu said TaMA would ensure continuous police and task force presence at the central business district to sustain the exercise to ensure success.
