Bawku (U/E), March 15, GNA - The George Alhassan Dramani Family Based Foundation has urged stakeholders in education to strengthen basic school education so as to give the pupils a strong foundation to build on.
The Foundation, a Non Governmental Organisation, is working to promote quality education at the basic level in the Bawku Municipality.
Mrs Helen Briamah, the Head of the Foundation, made the call when she donated 52 dual desks and some teaching and learning materials at a cost of 2,713 to the Winamzua Primary School in Bawku, Upper East Region.
She said basic education was the fundamental for quality education and investing in it would go a long way to arrest and improve the declining standard of education in the area.
Mrs Braimah said supporting the children at the early stages in school would prepare them adequately for the higher stages of learning as they easily imbibed new things when they were very young.
She said the immediate cause of poor academic performance in the area was due to the untrained teachers assigned to the kindergarten and lower primary who did not have the requisite knowledge to handle the children and give them the necessary fundamentals.
“They then grow with the weak background and fail to perform at the later stages in life,” she said.
Mr Joseph Azuntaaba, the Bawku Municipal Director of Education, received the donations and said the items would be used for its intended purpose.
He said access to furniture had become a challenge facing education in the area and the items would go a long way to promote teaching and learning in the municipality.
He commended the NGO and called on others to emulate it since education was the only weapon that could fight poverty.
Mrs Elizabeth Azumi Otoo of Christian Aid-Ghana and member of the Foundation, said it was founded by family members of the late Mr George Alhassan Dramani and the move was part of activities to commemorate his 50 years anniversary.
She said the Late George Alhassan Dramani was a former Director of the Ghana National Trading Corporation, a facilitator of education, and a football fun who died 1967.
