Apam (C/R), March. 13, GNA - Fourteen people died on the spot, while eleven others sustained various degrees of injuries in a gory accident that occurred at Gomoa Mprumaim on the Apam -Winneba Highway on Sunday.
Some of the injured were rushed to the Winneba Trauma Hospital while others are on admission at the Apam Catholic Hospital.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Cephus Edzeani, Apam District Police Commander who confirmed the incident to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said the accident occurred around 16:00 hours on Sunday.
He said it was caused by a Ford bus with registration number CR 1292-11 which bolted soon after an articulator Trailer with registration number GE 3282-X and a Benz Sprinter bus with registration number GM 1129-16 crashed. The Ford driver was later arrested at Biriwa
He said the Articulator trailer and the Ford bus were from Accra heading towards Cape Coast while the Benz Sprinter was from Cape Coast to Accra.
He said on reaching a section of the road, about one Kilometer to the Petrol Bay Filling Station and 50 meters from Kings Vocational Technical School at Gomoa Mprumaim, the Ford overtook the articulator trailer and quickly cut in.
According to him, the articulator trailer swerved to the other lane of the road in an attempt to avoid hitting the back of the Ford.
Meanwhile, the oncoming sprinter bus on top speed noticed it was too late to avoid the trailer resulting in a head on collision after which the sprinter bus somersaulted several times and the head of the Articulator trailer landed on it.
It took the Police and the Ghana Fire Service three hours to rescue the victims from the sprinter bus.
The bodies of the deceased’s have since been deposited at the Winneba Government Hospital mortuary.
