Juaso (Ash), Mar 13, GNA - Mathematics teachers have been asked to simplify the teaching of the subject to make it easy to understand and attractive to school children.
Mr. Ignatius Mwinbe Ere-Der, the Asante-Akim South District Education Director, said the widely held misconception that mathematics was a difficult subject should not continue.
It was pertinent for the teachers to find new ways of doing things to remove the phobia among students.
He was addressing a day’s workshop for 100 mathematics teachers drawn from primary schools in the district at Juaso.
The workshop was jointly organized by the Conference of Heads of Basic Schools (COHBS) and the District Education Directorate to expose them to modern teaching methods for effective classroom performance.
Mr. Ere-Der said the role of the mathematics teacher at the primary level was critical to the passing rate in the subject at the national level.
He therefore encouraged them to take advantage of the workshop to improve the quality of the teaching of the subject.
Mr. Charles Brefo, the district mathematics coordinator, said the goal was to build the capacity of teachers to raise the performance of pupils at the primary level.
This, he noted, would eventually improve the general performance of students in mathematics as they progressed to the senior high school and the tertiary level of education.
