Cape Coast, March 12, GNA - The Adisadel College (ADISCO) in Cape Coast, has celebrated 107 years of blazing the trail of academic excellence and extra curricula achievements in the country.
The week-long celebration, which was sponsored by the 1992-year group, was climaxed with a speech and prize giving and Founder’s Day on Saturday.
It was on the theme: “Securing the future of the child through holistic development: the Adisadel College Spirit”.
The celebration brought together people from all walks of lives including eminent old boys, present students and staff and other distinguished personalities from across the country.
Speaking on the theme, the Guest Speaker for the occasion, Mr Samuel Atta Akyea, Minister of Works and Housing, noted that providing real leadership was an indispensable factor in securing the future of the child through holistic development.
He indicated that it was imperative for parents, teachers and the national leadership to provide ‘real leadership’ to the child, starting from the home through schools and eventually translating into national policies and governance.
According to him, it is only through ‘real leadership’ that the light could be illuminated on the nation to facilitate human capital development as top most priority for accelerated growth.
Mr Atta Akyea, an old boy of the 1981 year group, said the foundation of self discipline and character was non-negotiable in the holistic development of the child,
He urged parents and guardians to take advantage of the free Senor High School initiative to educate their wards adding that, “it is the educated mind at every level of the society that will ultimately drive GDP of the country upwards”.
He advised the students to take their books serious because it was their rigorous and discipline learning that would determine their glorious future.
He asked them to demystify the notion that they were learning for their parents.
Mr Atta Akyea admonished the students to take advantage of the available technology to improve upon their learning rather than using it to engage in watching pornographic materials.
He encouraged the students to be confident and display boldness with good manners, show what was outrageous and evil and live by the Adisadel spirit.
The Headmaster, Mr William Kusi-Yeboah in his report, indicated that discipline had improved drastically in the School.
He said the Adisadel College which was established in 1910 with 29 boys currently had a student population of 2,150.
He said the School scored 98.8 per cent in the 2016 West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSE) and remained optimistic that the school would secure 100 per cent in the 2017 WASSCE.
Mr Kusi-Yeboah said the school admitted a little more than 900 students in 2015 but could only admit 400 students in 2016 due to inadequate dormitory facilities.
He expressed concern that a number of GETFUND projects had been abandoned and mentioned poor road network, inadequate security as some of the major challenges faced by the School.
He said the School had over the years produced men with outstanding qualities, serving in the field of education, politics, religion, medicine, law and business in Ghana, Africa and the world at large.
Aside sponsoring the anniversary, the 1992 group also remodelled and expanded the assembly hall to ease the congestion during dinning period.
Speaking at the inauguration, the Vice President of the year group, Cyril Kojo Ganson explained that they were not happy with the situation where students went to dinning in batches because the hall could not accommodate the population.
Awards were giving to deserving students, teachers and non-teaching staff.
