Accra, March 8, GNA - A survey conducted by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Accra revealed that most people are not aware of the International Women’s Day (IWD) being marked on the theme: “BeBoldForChange.”
Most of the interviewees said they were not aware of the Day or heard about it in the mass media.
Madam Sarah Adjei, a tomatoes seller at Tema station, said she was not aware that Wednesday marked the IWD.
She stated that, due to power outage in her neighbourhood, she was unable to hear the information about the celebration.
“I do not know today marks the International Women’s Day,” she stressed.
“I did not hear of it on the radio or television because of my busy schedule,” Madam Adwoa Mensah a sheabutter seller explained.
Mrs Daavi Ama Enyo, a roasted plantain vendor however said, she heard about the event on radio the morning, but was not educated about its significance.
Nana Sekyiwaa Baffoe-Bonnie the owner of SekyiConcepts said:” I heard the information on social media platform about how women are empowered in the society."
“International Women’s Day is all about Unity, Celebration, Reflection, Advocacy, and action,” she added.
International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.
The Day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.
It has been observed since in the early 1900's - a time of great expansion and turbulence in the industrialised world that saw booming population growth and the rise of radical ideologies.
International Women's Day is a collective day of global celebration and calls for gender parity.
