MTTU acquires new Speed Radar Guns
Accra, March 31, GNA The Motor, Transport and Traffic Unit (MTTU) of Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) will outdoor new Speed Radar Guns in April. Mr David Adonteng, Director, Policy Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation of NRSC, who made this known at the weekend, said the guns would be able to record all the needed information about any vehicle and driver who abuse road traffic regulation. The device could record the identity of the driver, the location where the incident took place, the time of the incidence, DVLAs data on the driver and the vehicle, and other information to make investigations simpler. Mr Adonteng announced this at the quarterly road safety walk organised by the Ministry of Transport for its agencies. The new equipment would help arrest drivers who abuse road traffic regulations and to forestall arguments which sometimes arise when drivers are arrested for a breach of traffic regulations. Sometimes when some drivers are arrested, they deny committing such offences and argue with the Police which sometimes leads to some of them going scot -free due to lack of substantive evidence against them, he added. Mr Adonteng noted that last year, the NRSC recorded about 2,000 accidents which was unfortunate, adding that since the beginning of the year, it had recorded about 500 accidents. He appealed to Ghana Highway Authority and the District Assemblies to endeavour to mark their roads since road marking play major roles in roads safety. As part of the Easter celebrations, NRSC will organise sensitisation programme at a national programme at Nkawkaw in the Eastern Region, while similar programmes will be held at the regional capitals. Mr Adonteng said as part of NRSCs measures to improve road safety, drivers who flout the regulation would not only be fined, but would also be taken through driving lessons on the offence they committed at the National Drivers Training Academy. He appealed to passengers to caution drivers when they over speed and report them to the nearest police station. Mr Siisi Esuman-Ocran, Head Policy, Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation at the Ministry of Transport, called on Ghanaians to exercise regularly since it is good for their health and total well-being. Some of the 15 agencies, which took part in the safety walk, include Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, Regional Maritime University, Ghana Maritime Authority, NRSC and Driver Vehicle and Licensing Authority.GNA
