Ms Gertrude Banini, Ghana’s Professional Chess Sports Champion, who made her debut at the just ended 45th World Chess Olympiad in Budapest, in Hungary, has promised to inspire the next generation to venture into the sport.
Miss Banini, who also achieved the prestigious Woman Candidate Master (WCM) title, to cement her place as one of the best talents in the chess world games, pledged to help unearth other talent in the sports for a brighter future.
Miss Banini, a native of Keta, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said her outstanding performance, strategic depth and determination has caught the attention of chess enthusiasts and experts across the globe and that was a great achievement.
“I have the privilege to be among some 180 strong season players with international experience across the world, and it has been an incredible journey and playing at the Olympiad has been my dream over the years, and leaving with a title is beyond my imagination,” she said.
She said that the Woman Candidate Master title was awarded by FIDA, an International Chess Federation to players, who demonstrated exceptional skills and win at least 50 per cent of their games within a minimum of seven matches during the Olympiad.
She told GNA that her main objective was to serve as role model and inspire the younger girls to the next level in order to break barriers and aim for excellence.
“The games always seem to male dominated ones, but with my determination and dedication I decided to change the narrative and show to the whole world that females are also capable.”
Ms Banini, former student of University of Professional Studies Accra (UPSA) explained to the GNA that after winning the Woman Candidate Master title, her next plan of action was to compete in the other international tournaments to showcase her talent and win the Woman FIDE Master title to rise the flag of Ghana high.
She also expressed the desire to start chess programmes for young girls to share her passion for the game and unearth many talents at the grassroots level and advocate for creation of chess clubs in all the regions in Ghana.
GNA understand that Miss Banini’s remarkable achievement at the 45th World Chess Olympiad was not just a personal victory but a source of pride and inspiration to the nation as well.
