Fire on Tuesday broke-out in parts of the 10th Floor of the Job 600 Building of Parliament House but the quick intervention by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) brought the situation under control.
Sounds of fire alarms on the block were heard a few minutes after1800 hours in the precincts of Parliament House that compelled Members of Parliament (MPs) and staff to rush out of their offices to the open space between the new block and the tower block (Job 600).
Earlier, there had been intermittent power cuts in the building of the House.
When MPs, officials and staff rushed out they realised that there had been a fire incident on the 10th Floor of the block.
The Ghana News Agency leant that personnel of the Fire Services stationed at the House initially managed to control the fire but the tenders brought to House found it difficult to get closer to the Job 600 Building because of accessibility challenges.
After sometime of waiting, the tenders made a detour through the eastern gate to get closer to where the fire was spotted and the firemen were finally able to extinguish the fire.
A cross section of people the GNA spoke to said the National Fire Service must improve upon its communication among personnel stationed in and outside the House.
They said accessibility of vehicles to strategic areas must be improved to salvage any emergency situation that may arise in the precincts.
Majority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, speaking to journalists at 1940 hours, stated that the firemen were still up in the building to ensure everything was safe.
Mr Billy Anaglatey, the Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, told the media that the fire started in a kitchenette on the 10th Floor of the building.
He said 24 fire personnel were deployed there and managed to douse the fire adding that investigations were on-going to ascertain the actual cause of fire.
