The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana, Madam Charlotte Osei, is calling for a sanction to be imposed on Jihad Chaaban, the alleged perpetrator of the Marwako Restaurant assault.
Speaking on a special edition of Joy FM’s Super Morning show to commemorate International Women’s Day, Madam Osei said a suit needs to be filed against the perpetrator to serve as a deterrent to others.
She indicated that even if the assault was committed by one employee against another employee, the employer needs to be held accountable.
“As an employer if you allow a system where one employee can abuse another employee, you are still liable because you have a duty to create a safe work environment.”
Discussing issues pertaining to the development of women on the Day, today, March 8, 2017, the all-female panelists on the show agreed that although there has been a charge of assault against the perpetrator, it is not enough.
They noted that apart from the criminal aspect, civil proceedings should be initiated.
This, they agreed, will allow the victim to seek for exemplary damages intended to make the perpetrator feel it in their pocket and serve as a deterrent as well.
The news of a Ghanaian female employee having her face shoved and held down in a bowl of pepper by her supervisor at the restaurant some few days ago went viral attracting heavy criticism from the general public.
This development, revived conversations on how foreign employers in Ghana treat their Ghanaian workers.
Otiko Afisa Djaba, the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, yesterday pledged to get to the bottom of the issue and seek justice for the victim.
Reports indicate that, the supervisor, of Lebanese extraction, alleged to be the perpetrator, Jihad Chaaban was put before court today, but he pleaded not guilty to the three charges of causing harm, assault, and offensive conduct leveled against him.
