The suspected substances. INSET: Two of the Suspects
The Volta North Regional Police Command has arrested four persons in two separate incidents for transporting substances suspected to be narcotic drugs within the Volta Region.
The first arrest involving two persons identified as Etomam Vumadzi, a driver, and Emmanuel Komlagah, allegedly conveying the illicit substances from Godenu towards Togo occurred on Friday, January 30, 2026.
According to a press release issued and signed by Inspector Felix Kwao, Public Relations Officer for Volta North Regional Police Command, the arrest followed an intelligence-led operation which indicated that a Toyota minibus with registration number GT-6592-19 was heading toward Togo with a consignment suspected to be narcotic drugs. Acting on the intelligence, officers intercepted the vehicle and arrested the occupants.
A search conducted on the vehicle led to the discovery of eighteen (18) sacks, each containing thirty-six (36) yellow oval parcels, bringing the total number of recovered parcels to six hundred and forty-eight (648). The substances are suspected to be narcotic drugs.
Preliminary investigations further revealed that a third individual, identified only as Joseph, contacted the police via phone and attempted to influence the officers by offering a bribe of GH¢150,000.
Additionally, the suspects reportedly offered an upfront amount of GH¢32,000. The police firmly rejected all offers.
The suspects are currently in police custody, assisting with ongoing investigations, and are expected to be arraigned before court to face the full rigours of the law.
The second incident involved the arrest of two drivers by the Volta North Regional Police Command for allegedly transporting suspected narcotic drugs in the region.
The arrest was made on Thursday, January 29, 2026, when police patrol officers intercepted two vehicles—bearing registration numbers GE-8254-13 and AW-4321-14—which were heading towards Kpando. The vehicles were suspected to be conveying dried substances believed to be Indian hemp.
According to the press release issued and signed by Inspector Felix Kwao, the drivers attempted to evade arrest upon spotting the patrol team, by speeding into a nearby bush.
However, officers pursued and successfully apprehended the suspects, identified as Akyereme George, aged 43, and Benjamin Akpado, aged 23.
A subsequent search conducted on the vehicles revealed 20 sacks containing a total of 680 pieces of dried leaves, neatly packed in white rubber bags and suspected to be narcotic substances.
The suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations, while efforts are underway to arrest the owners of the suspected drugs to face the full rigours of the law.
The Volta North Regional Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying efforts to combat drug trafficking and related criminal activities in the region, and has called on the public to support the police by providing credible information to aid ongoing operations.
The police assured residents of their continued dedication to ensuring safety and security across the Volta North Region.
