DSP Bawah Jalil and the team with some of the suspects in Sakasaka
The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Special Operations Team, has arrested six suspected drug peddlers in Sakasaka, a suburb of Tamale in the Northern Region.
The operation forms part of a series of swoops aimed at clamping down on drug peddlers and users of illicit substance in the region.
In an interview, leader of the IGP Special Operations Team, DSP Alhaji Bawah Jalil, told DAILY GUIDE that, “For some weeks now, the team picked up intelligence about people engaging in criminal activities and stealing from residents in this neighborhood and so we applied a strategy and succeeded in arrested the criminals,” he said.
He indicated that the team arrested six suspects with some illicit drugs and other ‘dangerous’ items.
“We are taking the suspects and the seized items to the police station to be handed over for further investigation,” he added.
DSP Jalil also issued a strong warning to individuals and groups involved in criminal activity in the region.
“We are coming for you, and when you are arrested you will be prosecuted,” he warned.
Residents of Sakasaka commended the IGP Special Operations Team for the swift action, saying the drug activity in the area has been a major concern and a bad example for young residents.
Nurudeen Yakubu, a Sakasaka resident, told DAILY GUIDE that the community had repeatedly tried to drive the criminals away without success and welcomed the intervention of the police service.
“We have chased them from this base almost every night, but they kept returning to continue their criminal activities. We are very happy that the IGP Special Operations Team has finally driven them out of this area,” he said.
