In a groundbreaking moment for Namibia, Vice President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has emerged victorious in the presidential election, securing 57.3% of the total valid votes cast.
This decisive win not only marks a significant milestone for the country but also cements Nandi-Ndaitwah’s place as Namibia’s first female president.
Nandi-Ndaitwah’s victory is a testament to the ruling SWAPO party’s enduring grip on power, despite facing its stiffest challenge yet.
The party has maintained its hold on the country since Namibia gained independence from apartheid South Africa in 1990.
The election, held on November 27, 2024, saw Nandi-Ndaitwah, 72, a prominent figure in the SWAPO party, face off against 14 other candidates.
Her closest competitor, Panduleni Itula, leader of the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC), secured 284,186 votes, a significant margin behind Nandi-Ndaitwah.
The electoral process was not without its challenges, with opposition parties expressing dissatisfaction over technical issues during voting.
Despite these concerns, the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) declared Nandi-Ndaitwah the winner, with Chairperson Elsie Nghikembua confirming the results.
Nandi-Ndaitwah’s ascension to the presidency marks a new chapter for Namibia, as the country navigates pressing issues such as high cost of living, corruption, and unemployment.
As the first female president, Nandi-Ndaitwah is poised to make a lasting impact on the country’s future.
In a significant milestone for African politics, Nandi-Ndaitwah becomes only the second woman to hold the presidency in the continent, following in the footsteps of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia.
