A dramatic scene unfolded on Friday at the Kawukudi intersection in Accra, as the National Chief Imam’s entourage forced its way through a police barricade.
The police had blocked the 37-bound section to facilitate the passage of #StopGalamseyNow protesters, who made a brief stop on their way to the Kanda highway.
According to eyewitnesses, the Chief Imam was traveling from the National Mosque to his residence at New Fadama when the incident occurred.
The entourage reportedly refused to comply with police instructions, leading to a tense standoff.
This incident comes amidst growing tensions in the city, particularly with regard to the #StopGalamseyNow protests.
The protests aim to bring attention to the devastating effects of galamsey, or illegal mining, on Ghana’s environment and economy.
Background of the #StopGalamseyNow Protests
The #StopGalamseyNow movement has gained momentum in recent months, with citizens calling for urgent action to address the environmental degradation and economic losses caused by galamsey.
The protests have been largely peaceful, but Friday’s incident highlights the potential for clashes between protesters, authorities, and other groups.
