Former men's champion Jeff Bagerbaseh moved into the quarter-finals of the 2017 McDan West African Open Championship after defeating compatriot Pascal Ziyab 6-1, 6-3 at the Accra Sports Stadium yesterday, to set up a clash with Bernard Dugbah.
Bagerbaseh, the 2014 champion stepped up his game right from the start, unleashing powerful forehands against former National Rankings champion, Ziyab, who improved in the second set, but was unable to mount a sustained challenge.
Dugbah was similarly efficient as he accounted for Reginald Quartey 6-2, 6-2 to face the defending champion as both players edged closer to the ultimate prize of $3,000.
In other matches, Ivorian Joel Meda's reward for thrashing Ghana's Benjamin Palm will be a quarter-final tie with the winner of the clash between top seed Thomas Setodji and Francis Akpese.
Beninois star, Felix Hounkpevi, proved a tough customer for Daniel Anum Quartey, progressing via a 7-5, 6-2 victory where a clash with the winner of the tie between Charles Asomani and Jean Kandangah awaits him.
In the women's draw, Ivorian Kouadio Amandine battered Stella Essilfie 6-0, 6-0 to set up a mouth-watering quarter-final clash with Nigerian Sarah Adegoke who beat Maanya Viswanath 6-2, 6-3.
Beninois prospect Follyquaye Esperance made light work of Patricia Nyarko after a 6-1, 6-0 victory and now awaits the winner of the match between Naa McKorley and Lizzy Airhunmwunde.
In the other results, Nigerian Angela Macleod beat Ernestina Atiso 6-1, 6-0, Annette Cruickshank stunned Sia Dorine 6-4, 6-2 and Mariama Ibrahim retired on account of injury at a time she was trailing 1-4 against Emma Cudjoe.
